Apple Office in Cambridge

Apple’s Cambridge office is located at 30 Station Road, directly opposite the Microsoft Research office near Cambridge railway station. The building is a modern, seven-storey development with approximately 79,000 square feet of office space and a stated capacity of up to around 900 people.

Apple’s Cambridge office at 30 Station Road has grown from its early links with VocalIQ and Siri into a broader research and development centre. However, the building’s capacity should not be confused with Apple’s actual headcount in Cambridge. Apple does not publicly disclose how many employees work at each of its offices, so the real number is likely to be lower and may change over time.

The building was completed in 2022, after which Apple moved from its smaller office at 90 Hills Road. The move suggested that Apple intended to expand its research and engineering presence in Cambridge.

Apple’s Cambridge operation has strong links to the city’s artificial intelligence ecosystem. In 2015, Apple acquired VocalIQ, a Cambridge-based artificial intelligence company with connections to the University of Cambridge. VocalIQ specialised in conversational voice technology and natural human-computer interaction.

After the acquisition, much of the team remained in Cambridge. This became one of the foundations of Apple’s research presence in the city, and the office was sometimes described in the media as a development centre for Siri.

Today, Apple’s work in Cambridge appears to extend well beyond Siri. Based on publicly advertised roles, its local teams have worked in areas including speech technology, computer vision, audio machine learning, Apple Intelligence, Siri evaluation, health-related artificial intelligence, camera and imaging algorithms, CPU verification and hardware architecture.

For that reason, it would be inaccurate to describe the Cambridge office simply as Apple’s “Siri laboratory”. A better description would be:

Apple’s Cambridge research and development office, focusing on artificial intelligence, machine learning, audio, imaging and hardware technologies.

Apple is only one of many major technology companies with a presence around Station Road. Microsoft, Amazon, Samsung and several other technology businesses also have offices nearby. Further north, Cambridge Science Park is home to companies such as Qualcomm, Broadcom and AMD.

Cambridge may be a relatively small city, but its universities, research institutions and technology ecosystem have made it one of the most important technology centres in the United Kingdom. Apple’s decision to expand its office here is another sign of the city’s continuing importance to global research and development.
