website design

Coding has become a much more accessible skill in recent years. That doesn’t mean it’s necessarily gotten easier to create a good website or program, but methods for understanding the process have improved and grown more widespread. These days it’s not even uncommon for children to learn the basics from workbooks or in special courses. And we can all expect more benefits in the future that will continue to make the entire practice of coding easier, more appealing, and generally better.

Even a master coder however, or a newcomer taking advantage of the increasing accessibility of it all, needs a good idea for a site or program. And if there’s going to be a lot of effort, that may mean you need a profitable idea to make it all worthwhile. To that end, we’re covering four ideas for sites that aren’t too complex to piece together, and which might just yield profits if done properly.

A Personal Blog

A personal blog is something you can do virtually any way you’d like. There are services designed to help you set up a site without coding, and for that matter there are even some public platforms (like Medium) where you can host your own running blog of sorts as well. However, for coders a personal blog makes for a nice simple challenge that can still result in a profit if it’s done well. It takes time, but if you’re able to tap into a niche topic or appeal to a certain demographic you’ll be able to grow a substantial and sustainable audience. Then, through any number of different channels, you can begin to make some income simply from publishing your thoughts and maintaining a sharp, high-end website.

A Bookmaking Site

Bookmaking sites are somewhat more complicated, because you’ll need to be licensed and regulated in order to make a proper one work. This is more of a business than a single website. However, you can look at the latest well-regarded sites in the UK’s active betting industry and see clearly that these sites tend to accomplish quite a lot with relatively little complexity. Thus, it’s a manageable challenge from a coding standpoint to create a site with bookmaking listings and relevant data and features. And of course, even if you’re unable to set up a whole betting operation, you can still tap into this industry by designing a similar site at which you post tips and information and merely link to or suggest professional betting platforms. In either case there’s profit to be had.

A Pop Culture Review Site

Pop culture review sites – film reviews, book reviews, TV recaps, etc. – are somewhat like personal blogs in that they can be designed by simpler means but can also make for good coding challenges. Additionally, they’re interesting to consider from a profitability standpoint. On the one hand, it’s a very crowded space and it’s hard to be unique; on the other hand, the audiences are built-in, massive, and constantly interested, which means if you’re able to zero in on a given topic or style, you may stand to profit fairly quickly. From a coding standpoint you may also want to consider what else you can work in besides written reviews: links to purchasing options, automated rating and polling systems, interactive graphics, etc.

A Q&A Site

A Q&A site isn’t something that might come to mind readily. Frankly it’s not even a category of website many people would consciously or literally recognize. It’s interesting though that such sites were included on one thorough list of types of websites that make money. The argument there was simply that in a given niche with appropriate expertise (you’ll likely need to source material from experts on a given topic) the ad revenue could be significant from visitor traffic. We’d add that a site like this can reasonably operate on a subscription model too. Whatever the case it’s another reasonable simple coding endeavor that can result in a profitable online site.
