How to Find Common Characters in an array of Strings?


Given an array A of strings made only from lowercase letters, return a list of all characters that show up in all strings within the list (including duplicates). For example, if a character occurs 3 times in all strings but not 4 times, you need to include that character three times in the final answer.

You may return the answer in any order.

Example 1:
Input: [“bella”,”label”,”roller”]
Output: [“e”,”l”,”l”]

Example 2:
Input: [“cool”,”lock”,”cook”]
Output: [“c”,”o”]

1 <= A.length <= 100
1 <= A[i].length <= 100
A[i][j] is a lowercase letter

C++ Implementation of Finding Common Characters in an array of Strings

The given problem has constraints on the input and thus we can count the frequencies of each character in each string and store them in a hash map, or simply – a two dimension counter table. The first run is to count the frequency of 26 letters for each string. The second run thus is to find the common letters by iterating over each character and check each string. The minimal number will be used to push to the result vector.

Both implementation have the time complexity O(NM) where N is the number of strings and M is the average number of characters in a string. The space complexity is O(1).
