I have just recently moved to my new home, and I’ve taken the plusnet broadband with me. It was only the slow 5M ADSL network in my previous apartment but I have it upgraded to Fibre Extra (70Mbps = 8.75MBps).
At first, the speed test was never more than 40Mbps and sometimes it even can’t even reach 10Mbps. I contacted plusnet support they confirm that my line has a limit of 80Mbps download speed (the upload limit is 20Mbps) but due to WIFI interference it is almost impossible to reach the limit if you are using WiFi. You will be close to the maximum if you are directly connecting your PC to router with Ethernet cable.
My router and modem is placed downstairs (close to window) at living room. My little home-office is upstairs (vertically). I don’t like to set up a long-distance cable although it may be feasible (but not practical). I then came across this little USB device for receiving WiFisignals (high gain enhancer). Click the below to buy one for yourself!
It is a small USB (2.0 only, but enough speed) device. With modern Windows OS, the device driver is automatically installed so you don’t need the CD that comes with the box.
I put it on the windows so it can get good signals.
It says up to 300Mbps (should be enough to handle 70M fibre broadband) wireless speed (hardware limit), but it depends on your broadband speed and your USB interface. There is a 1.5 meter USB extension cable in the package, so you can try different handy spots (also adjust the dual antennas) to see if you can get better signals.
Finally, re-run a speed test that proves that this little thing does work!.

The device shows a flashing green light when data is transferring.
Try to enforce a 5GHz connection. My mac and AirPort Extreme has a very stable 1200Mbps connection by using 5Ghz wifi, the real LAN file copying speed is almost as fast as my Gigabyte wired connection.
Thanks. does the router and modem need to support 5G? Currently the WIFI 2.4G is widely used but not sure how can I get 5G wifi?
