Do I have to install software on Ubuntu in order to have this feature? If not, how does it work?

Yes you need to install the agent on your Ubuntu OS for us to connect to. You can do that here. Once you have the agent running, we can set up your server on our SBM (server Backup Manager) and start a seed backup (slow) so all the next incremental backups are much faster.

The backup does not take up the harddisk space of the server?

Correct, the backups are stored on our backup servers so no space is taken up on your server at all. You then get a login to our backup servers so you can manage / restore / download your backed up files and databases.
