Review of WiseUp “Smart” Eyewear Sunglass Camera (USB Chargeable 1080p Video Spy Camera)

Summer has come and the temperature rises to more than 30 degrees as shown on a smart meter in my house. The sunglass is a favorite/must-have gadget that you can wear out in the sunshine day.

I have recently purchased the following Eyewear Sunglass from Amazon, it is stylish and does the job (as what a sunglass is supposed to do).

However, it has a not-so-obvious camera in the middle and one Micro USB charging interface on the right handle, and a Micro SD card slot (inbuilt 8GB Micro SD card). There is also a button for powering on/off, taking photos and taking videos (1080P).

Smart Sunglass?

Not exactly in my dictionary. If you call a device ‘Smart’, it has to at least provide voice control. Unlike Google Glass, this sunglass does not take any controls other than pressing the only button.

Smart Glass Takes Photos?

Under what circumstances, would you take a photo using Smart Glasses? The modern smart phones (e.g. iphone, windows phone, android phones) are already developed and the image quality is excellent. So the answer is pretty much in the very rare situation, when maybe your hands are not free and you need to voice-control the sunglass.

So, my point is unless ‘smart glass’ has voice-controls or better, the taking-photo should not be the main selling point. This sunglass allows you to take photo by pressing once the button, however, I doubt this feature will be frequently used, as my iPhone is so good.

Smart Sunglass takes 1080p videos

However, the main objective of this smart sunglass is to record videos. I still need to power it on first by pressing 4 seconds the power button, and the blue indicator gets illuminated, then press the button for two seconds so the blue light flashes, which mean it starts to record the video.

As the blue indicator is the only feedback, I have to take it off, set it up, then wear it back.

Advantages of Video-Recordable Glass

Here are the main reasons that you should get:

  • You can take videos from the first angle, from where your eyes are.
  • You need handset-free devices.
  • Spy camera, in case you need to record some evidences
  • It can be used as a car camera.

However, the image quality is far perfect from what the modern smart phones can do. Below is taken from the AVI video recorded by this sunglass.

And here are a few disadvantages:

  • No image stablization, so the videos are shaky but you post-process the videos.
  • Only AVI format supported, which size is generally larger than MP4
  • 500MAh battery, allows you to record 1.5 hours, but takes 2 hours to charge via Micro USB.
  • Videos and Photos are marked with a timestamp (you can’t change) on right-bottom. The start time is pre-set in the time.txt of the Micro SD card.
  • Difficult to operate in practical use
  • No indicator when the battery goes low. Videos are saved every 10 minutes.

The Wiseup glass allows you to take 1920x1080p videos with 30fps. It is weight 55g and the dimension is 14.5x7x4.7 cm.
