I have 15 domains so far, and only 1 currently managed by CloudFlare Registra. Recently I decide to migrate all domains to CloudFlare registra because of cost. At CloudFlare, it seems the cheapest fee to renew a .COM domain ($9.15 per year) while in Namesilo the fee is around $10.5 – so 15 domains that would save me around $20 per year. Second, I have use CloudFlare to Reverse-Proxy all my domains (websites), and it makes sense to also use their Domain Registra.
I have now transfered 13/15 domains to let them be managed by Cloudflare.
Namesilo is a 100% Domain Registra company, while CloudFlare does more than that: Reverse Proxy, Web Security (Firewall), Caching (Speed), Image Resizing and more and more.
Here are the steps I taken to transfer a domain from Namesilo Domain Registra to CloudFlare Domain Registra.
As I already am using CloudFlare to manage my websites, so the good thing is that the DNS records need not be changed per transfered domain except for email configuration while previously, I used NameSilo to forward my emails e.g. Catch-All Emails, now I have to do one step in CloudFlare to set this up (very simple, and quick to do. The cloudflare even provides a one-click function to remove outdate DNS records and add new ones required).
It takes roughly up to 5 days for a complete transfer. I have paid a fee of transfer which should add an extra 1 year expiry to the .com domain after it is transfered, unless the .COM domain has already a 9+ years expiry, which a 10 year maximum expiry will be set.
How to Transfer Domains to Other Registra? Step by Step Tutorial
First, I have to remove the locks in Namesilo (Unlocking the domain). It takes up to hours for changes to be effected (due to DNS caching and propagating). The domain needs to be unlocked, otherwise the Domain Transferee (e.g. CloudFlare in this case) will stop and suggest you unlock before you continue.
Then, I have to initiate the Domain Transfer in CloudFlare, made the payment (of one year cost) to transfer which also gives one extra year expiry unless your domain (.COM) is already having the maximum 10 years expiry.
I have to obtain the Authorization code from Namesilo. I clicked the “Email” so to get the code by email. And I copied the Code to CloudFlare.
And that is about it – just wait and relax. I did get a separate email from Namesilo to say the Transfering is on the way and I can click a link to stop it if I change my mind or I did not initiate the process. It took roughly 5 days for a domain transfer to complete.
Afterall, the domain transfering experience (from Namesilo to Cloudflare) is pleasant, and I only needed to set up the Email Forwarding once the domain is in CloudFlare’s hand – all other DNS settings are unaffected since the domains were already managed by CloudFlare (Reverse Proxy) before the transfer took place.
The .COM domain at CloudFlare is currently priced at $9.15 per year, and it is about $10.45 at Namesilo. For .net, at Cloudflare it is priced at $10.10 per year, and at Namesilo, it is about $11+.
You can register the domain at NameSilo.
