QuickhostUK VPS Upgrade to SSD!

QuickHostUK is indeed the best. They just upgraded my VPS to SSD.

Yesterday, I couldn’t connect to my VPS (My sites were down for like an hour). I login to QuickHostUK and apparently, there is an upgrade ongoing.

Later, I’ve got emails from QuickHostUK:

Hi justyy,

We have a new Cloud based platform we are currently testing. Would you be interested in moving your VM over to it? It's SSD based storage so you should see much performance improvement.

Please let me know if you would like to :O)

I said yes after I know that none changes were required by me (re-configure apache, files were copied automatically etc). Even I kept the IP address (this affects the SSL) after automated process. Then at first, I tried using command hdparm -tT /dev/sda1 but it doesn’t show me a faster I/O performance using SSD. I also verified using command cat /sys/block/sda/queue/rotational and the output is 1 which means it is not a ssd.

The QuickHostUK replies:

Your VPS will not see a SSD but your VPS is running on SSD. So the server your VPS runs on is SSD but your VPS will show you standard disk but should be much quicker now?

I double checked the I/O using command dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync and indeed it is a lot faster:

1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 3.90855 s, 275 MB/s

Before the process, it was using standard hard disk and the performance was:

16384+0 records in
16384+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 23.571 s, 45.6 MB/s

Almost 6 times faster that my VPS is on SSD. And I of course notice that there is a performance difference (websites load faster) between SSD and HDD.

It takes 4 seconds to write a 1G file so definitely it is equipped SSD.

That's OK you're a long time customer so you're more than welcome :) I'm glad you have seen a performance increase also.
