I have been using QuickhostUK for a year now so it is time to consider different options. My previous package was 3 cores, 2GB RAM, 20GB SSD, 5TB/month bandwith, 1 static ipv4 and 2 ipv6 (but I don’t care). It costs around 23 pounds per month.
I want to have a second IPv4 so that I can make my other site HTTPS. But I don’t want to go for VPS Professional package because that is too expensive for me to afford (37.99 per months excluding VAT). I already have a 1GB and 1 CPU core as add-ons so if I simply add another IP address (3 pounds per month) the total price would be similar if I go for dedicate server or other VPS packages.
Earlier, QuickhostUK honors me a quote for dedicate server and I was a bit interested in this: (QuickhostUK primarily provide VPS as they can be instantly scaled to add more CPU or RAM where dedicated cannot. It must be powered down, unracked and hardware swapped out.”
“We will not be providing un-managed servers publicly however we could provide you with:
Dell PowerEdge Server –
* Processor #1: 2.33 Ghz Quad-Core Xeon
* Processor #2: 2.33 Ghz Quad-Core Xeon
* Memory: 8GB
* Hard Drive #1: 300GB SAS
* Hard Drive #2: 300GB SAS
* RAID Controller: Hardware RAID1
* 5 IP Addresses
So 8 Cores, 8GB RAM, 2x300GB RAID1 (in case of drive failure) for £49 /month (no contract).”
After talking to friendly QuickhostUK support and a few email exchanges, I decided to give up on dedicate server because:
QuickhostUK: “OK let me look into this, I know you started out with us with regular shared web hosting and quickly outgrew this and purchased a small VPS, You then outgrew this and upgraded to a medium VPS. We then upgraded you to SSD disks. I am a little worried if I am honest that you wish to now move to a less powerful server with slower disk. It would be as slow as your old VPS with HDD not SSD. Can we just confirm you do understand that this spec dedicated server will be slower than your current VPS and is non-upgradable as far as CPU and Disk? If you wanted to change disks it would mean either a power down and raid rebuild or the purchase and migration to another server. Can I just ask why you are looking for dedicated servers? Is there a particular reason? are there any concerns you have with your current server that we can discuss and fix? I’m just trying to understand your needs better and provide your the most honest advice I can. I wouldn’t want you to migrate to service to then find it is not suitable. ”
Me: “Yes, you remind me that dedicate server is non-upgradable so maybe this isn’t good for me. The current CPU (3 cores) and 2 GB are sufficient for now. but what I want is to have more disk spaces (20GB is a bit less and hard disk on VPS are expensive compared to dedicate server). also, I want another IP address so I can make on of my other website HTTPS. I am now paying around 300 GBP per year, so if I go for upgrade (which is VPS professional) , it is roughly the similar price than dedicate server. do you have something between VPS business to VPS professional ? I currently have 1GB RAM and 1 CPU as add-ons so if I add another IP and more Harddisk, the total price would be similar to VPS professionally/ dedicate server, so that is why I am comparing different options.
What I want for now is…
3 cores CPU (2.7GHz per core)
2 GB RAM
30 GB SSD (if not, 20GB is fine for now)
2 IP address
5TB bandwith”
QuickHostUK: “so the Fasthost comparison is: £29/month for 3 months (and then £39/month) + £49.00 Setup fee. (£502/year)
2 x CPU cores “Only Dual Core”
4GB RAM DDR2 “DDR2 is Slow”
2 x 250GB SATA RAID 1 “HDD is Slow”
You currently have: £23.82/month.
3 x CPU cores
2GB RAM DDR3
20GB SSD RAID10
We can offer you: £35.00/month. (£420/year)
4 x CPU cores “Quad Core” (2.3GHz per core)
3GB RAM DDR3 “DDR3”
50GB SSD RAID10 “RAID10″
2 x xIPv4 Addresses
2 x xIPv6 Addresses
If you need more IPs you can add them any time. ”
QuickhostUK promises that if I pay annually there will be 1 month discount so that gives 385/year = 32.08 GBP per month.
This package is essentially the VPS Professional which costs 37.99 GBP per months (excluding VAT). And on Fasthosts, the same package is twice expensive.
After I go for QuickhostUK, my VPS got rebooted very quickly and the additional core, SSD and RAM are available. Use the htop command gives:
Well done QuickhostUK and Thank you for offering nice bargain discounts to your loyal customer.
PS: with such powerful VPS node (although each core 2.3GHz is a bit slower compared to previous 2.7GHz), I can deploy a web spider/crawler, build a source version control server, set up a VPN (proxy) etc… There is no boundary for imaginations!
Use command df -h to give you the space of SSD.
